Collage: Untitled 13 by Allison Caesar

"This group of collages was inspired by an invitation to exhibit work at the Hastings Branch Library in Pasadena. I knew I wanted to create something just for that experience.

At the time, I was interested in a return to working with paper. Much of my collage work, like the paintings and constructions, is sourced from my immediate environment. I work with materials in my everyday life be it from a hardware store or my job in a public school classroom. 

Knowing I wanted to create work from previous studio projects, I began to cut, sew, and assemble scrap materials. Stumbling upon a packet of district materials handed to me by a friend, I incorporated the instructional cards for stability. I soon realized the text had relevance to the assignment, which was to simply construct. Like the paintings, there is no preordained top or bottom. Text from the cards is visible throughout the series and is treated as just another design element.
