George Nelson's iconic design journey began when a pricey Swedish silk lamp sparked his imagination. Inspired by industrial plastic-coating techniques used on decommissioned Liberty ships, Nelson engineered an ingenious solution: he mounted steel wire frames on a turntable and applied translucent plastic in a continuous spray, creating a seamless, durable shell. The result was the revolutionary Bubble Lamp (1952)—a masterpiece that transforms ordinary light into a warm, diffused glow. This authentic version, crafted in collaboration with the George Nelson Foundation, features an organic silhouette that softens any interior while delivering gentle, even illumination. The washable surface ensures lasting beauty and practicality.
