Piero Lissoni
PIERO LISSONI (1956 - present)
“I like to design something that is to a greater or lesser extent clean and silent” ~Piero Lissoni
We thought it would be interesting to profile some the designers whose work we represent at Modern Resale. In doing so, the work of the prolific master of minimalism, Piero Lissoni, seemed like a good launch point. An Italian architect and designer, known for his contemporary minimalist furniture, Lissoni has worked with many of the world's most notable design companies.
Minimalism as the name implies, is far from lavish, but it certainly does not imply a lack of design. As a grandchild of the Bauhaus movement, 1960s minimalism continued to reject the highly decorative styles of the past. Minimalist designers resolve to work only with the purpose at hand, shunning anything they deem nonessential. Each detail is defined by the specific application, space or material that it serves. There is nothing more and nothing less. The movement has influenced much art and technology of the late 20th century and has become not only a philosophy but also a way of life.
Piero Lissoni graduated from the Politecnico di Milano with an architectural degree in 1978. Working first as a designer for Molteni and Lema, he later moved on to become Art Director and Designer at Boffi, an Italian architecture firm which specializes in designing kitchens and bathrooms. It is during this period that Lissoni cements his position amongst Italy’s most influential furniture manufacturers.
Lissoni Associates was founded in 1986 with Nicoletta Canesi and a decade later formed the graphic design arm to the business,Graph X.
Springing forward to the 21st century, seventy-five people work in a combined international design studio covering architecture, interiors, industrial design, graphic design and branding. Lissoni believes each project that is taken on, must be the result of a unified design concept, not something that is pieced together from different sources.
The firm’s clients include many of our favorite design houses such as Cappellini, Cassina, Flos, Glas Italia, Kartell, Knoll, Lema, Living Divani, Porro, Poltrona Frau and Artemide. Lissoni Associates projects include showroom design, shops, trade fair stands, hotels, resorts, private houses and yachts worldwide.
As creative director of Boffi, Living Divani, Glas Italia and Porro, Lissoni brings an acute sense of proportion and quiet sensibility to his work, never designing for a specific function or purpose but for people.
